Last week, the top 2 finalists tossed a coin and Kris Allen won — he then chose to perform second in all the three songs that will be sang tonight. And so the much-anticipated night opened with Adam Lambert singing his masterpiece, “Mad World” which had the entire Nokia Theater in Los Angeles go ballistic. The judges were also proud of his much-subdued performance though Simon Cowell said his trench coat was over-theatrical. Kris Allen then reprised his “Ain’t No Sunshine” on piano — it was his best performance ever! He connected to the audience emotionally, his voice was flawless, he was in the zone as Randy Jackson would say. And for that, Kris Allen won Round 1 according to Simon Cowell.

In Round 2, the finalists performed songs chosen by American Idol creator Simon Fuller. Adam Lambert sang “A Change is Gonna Come” and according to all the judges, it was his best performance ever! Kris Allen then performed the socially conscious song “What’s Goin’ On”. He did it well but Simon Cowell said it was not ambitious enough for big night such as the finale. Adam wins Round 2 by “a million percent”. The last round had the contestants sing the same song — the coronation song co-written by American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi. Adam Lambert’s performance was dramaticbut Randy Jackson he was pitchy. Randy then said Kris Allen was much more suited to the coronation song. In closing, the judges asked the voters to review the entire season’s performance before voting.

Less than a year ago a woman named Sophia died after undergoing surgery for a congenital heart defect. Sophia was Danny Gokey’s wife, and an “American Idol” fan. They previously agreed that he would try out for the reality singing show and a month after her death, despite his intense grief for her, he auditioned in Kansas City. And the rest, as they say, is history ^_^ Danny Gokey finished third in season 8 of American Idol and said that he was grateful to the show and that his “life has turned around: I can’t say that enough … I was a nobody, and this show turned me into somebody and I’ll always be thankful for the roots that I came out of because I do believe that still the best has yet to come for me. This is not the end of the road.”

Danny Gokey was so shocked when his wife died that he couldn’t cry at her funeral. But now, he shared that he decided long ago to put away bitter feelings and enjoy life. “My whole testimony is overcoming,” he said. “Overcoming the impossible in my life, and now I want to take that message and tell people, ‘If I can do it, you can do it.’” Danny plans to take that message on the road this summer when he tours with the show’s top 10 finalists and in charity work for Sophia’s Heart Foundation. He said he also wants to make a rhythm and blues CD, although he hasn’t yet signed a record deal. Can’t wait for that!! ^_^

It’s a showdown between a flamboyant glam rock singer and a southern gentleman crooner, as different as night and day if I may say so. But Kris Allen and Adam Lambert have similarities too — both are very artistic, always doing a unique take on their song choices on American Idol. The latter has been a clear favorite, of both the judges and the audience, from the very start. Kris, on the other hand, has been relatively low-key. Unassuming, self-effacing, humble, the quite artistic type. Yet, as the weeks went on, he had been steadily gathering fans to his fold. No one realized it until the week Matt Giraud was eliminated — Adam Lambert was in the bottom two while Kris Allen was the first one who made it to safety. Quite a reversal eh??

To his credit, Adam hasn’t become complacent. He’s always pushed the envelope during his performances and the judges have praised him for it. Simon Cowell, the judge most likely not to be impressed by anybody, has become his staunchest ally. He barely concealed his strong affinity for Adam Lambert, and has even told everybody in last week’s show that they have to vote and not to feel complacent that Adam just win. So who do you think will win? Will America vote right? Will Kris Allen score an upset or will Adam Lambert’s fans score the final victory? Stay tuned you guys!

Another shocker: it’s not gonna be the “Adam Lambert-Danny Gokey showdown” that pundits have been predicting! No worries, Adam is in and he’s gonna fight it out with the soul man Kris Allen, the dark horse who’ve come a looong way! And with a record-breaking 88 million votes cast and with just 1 million separating the top two finalists, Kris might just win the most exciting season of American Idol ever! According to Simon Cowell, after the results were announced,

“None of us would have predicted this, guys … no disrespect because you were brilliant last night and just now … by the way, Danny, congratulations. But Kris, your second song ["Heartless"] in particular made you a contender. You’re in with a real shot. Adam, you know we’ve always liked you. This could be what we call a big ding-dong coming up next week.

Here’s a short recap: Katy Perry performed her latest single, “Waking Up In Vegas” with an elaborate sexy Elvis costume with “Adam Lambert” emblazoned on the cape. Jordin Sparks also performed her first single “Battlefield” from her as-yet-untitled upcoming second album. And with just minutes left in the show, Ryan Seacrest finally broke the tension by first announcing that Kris Allen would be in the finale, bringing a look of sheer surprise to the 23-year-old singer’s face. And then it was Adam Lambert’s turn — he was safe! And so we now wait for next Wednesday.. ^_^

Yes boys and girls, it’s the all-important episode — the top 3 finalists battling it out for a spot in the much-awaited finale! This week’s theme was “Judge’s choice/ contestants choice” and so Kris Allen, Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert sang two songs each. And it was a night full of awesome music! Danny opened the show with a version of Terrence Trent D’Arby’s “Dance Little Sister” picked by Paula Abdul. The four American Idol judges liked the vocals but not the dancing. Later he sung an acoustic version of Joe Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful” and was once again praised.

Kris Allen sang One Republic’s “Apologize” with piano picked for him by Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi. He was lambasted for not making the song his own. But Kris redeemed himself with his song choice of Kanye West’s “Heartless” — Randy said it was “better than the original” and Simon Cowell said that it put him back in the race =) Last to perform was Adam Lambert with Simon Cowell’s pick: “One” by U2. As expected, all judges loved his rendition. Adam’s song choice was Aerosmith’s “Cryin”. And it was once again an awesome performance. So, who will move on?? Find out tomorrow!
